Applications:

1. Low-Substituted Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (L-HPC)

L-HPC is primarily utilized as a tablet disintegrant and binder. As a binder and disintegrant, its key characteristics include ease of compression, strong applicability (especially for tablets that are difficult to form), and high plasticity and brittleness. Incorporating L-HPC enhances tablet hardness and surface luster while promoting rapid disintegration. Even when tablet hardness reaches 13 kg, disintegration can occur within ten minutes, thereby improving the tablet's intrinsic quality and therapeutic effect. Tablets prepared with L-HPC maintain stable disintegration properties during long-term storage.

As a tablet binder, L-HPC is typically added at 5–20% during wet granulation, with a direct compression dosage of 5–20%. As a disintegrating agent, the usual dosage ranges from 2–10% (typically 5%). Exact amounts are subject to specific formulation requirements.

L-HPC also serves as a food additive, functioning as an emulsifier, stabilizer, suspending agent, thickener, and film-forming agent in the food industry. It is used in the production of beverages, cakes, jams, and other products.

Additionally, L-HPC is employed in the daily chemical industry for manufacturing cosmetics such as creams, shampoos, and lotions.

3. Highly Substituted Hydroxypropyl Cellulose (HPC)

  1. As a Viscous Agent: In pharmaceuticals, it is mainly used as a binder for tablets, granules, and fine granules.
  2. As a Film-Coating Material: HPC exhibits excellent film-forming properties, creating tough, elastic films that can be combined with plasticizers. Mixing with other anti-moisture coating agents can further enhance film performance.
  3. As a Thickener/Stabilizer: It is used as a thickener for elixirs, an additive for lotions, and a stabilizer for emulsions.
  4. As a Matrix Material: It can be used to prepare matrix sustained-release tablets, sustained-release pellets, and double-layer sustained-release tablets.
  5. As a Gel/Ointment Base: In the presence of ethanol, it can form gels and serve as an ointment base.
