Its primary clinical use is as a topical disinfectant and antiseptic for infections of the skin and mucous membranes. Examples include suppurative otitis media, suppurative dermatitis, acute and chronic rhinitis, burns, and ulcers. It causes minimal tissue irritation, and its efficacy is not significantly diminished by the presence of pus or blood.
