Function:

Florfenicol exerts its antibacterial action by binding tightly to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, inhibiting peptidyltransferase's transpeptide reaction and blocking peptide chain elongation. Additionally, it selectively targets the 70S ribosomes—unique to bacterial cells—altering and interfering with peptidyltransferase function. This dual mechanism results in a strong, double-interference effect on bacterial protein synthesis. As an inhibitor of peptidyltransferase activity, florfenicol offers a broad spectrum of action, effective against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, as well as mycoplasma. Susceptible pathogens include Haemophilus parasuis, Pasteurella multocida, Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Chlamydia, Leptospira, and Rickettsia.

Application:

1. Effective against porcine pleuropneumonia (Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae), streptococcal infections, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS)-associated secondary infections, and bacterial diarrhea in pigs.
2. Used in poultry for treating infectious coryza, respiratory infections in pigs and cattle, bacterial rhinitis, avian chlamydiosis, avian Pasteurella infections, mastitis-hematic infection (MHA), salpingitis, and serositis.
3. For aquatic species: treats bacterial enteritis, septicemia, red-skin syndrome, Vibrio infections, vertical scale edema disease, nodular disease, mixed salmonellosis in flounder, red spot disease, red gill inflammation, and bacterial dysentery in bullfrogs.
