Function

  1. Approximately 98% of doxazosin present in plasma binds to proteins. In vitro studies using human plasma show that doxazosin does not interfere with the protein binding of digoxin, warfarin, phenytoin, or indomethacin.


  2. Clinical use of doxazosin alongside thiazide diuretics, furanilides, beta-blockers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, oral hypoglycemic agents, uricosurics, or anticoagulants has not demonstrated any significant or adverse drug interactions.


Application

Doxazosin is a long-acting alpha-1 blocker that selectively targets post-junctional adrenergic α1 receptors. Its primary action is to dilate peripheral blood vessels, reduce peripheral resistance, and lower blood pressure, with minimal impact on cardiac output. Similar to other alpha-1 blockers, doxazosin exerts a more pronounced effect on orthostatic blood pressure and heart rate. Additionally, it acts on α1 receptors within the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck, inducing relaxation of the bladder neck, prostate, and prostatic capsule. This action decreases urethral and bladder outlet resistance, alleviating obstructive urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia.
