Product Introduction
Isopropyl acetoacetate (molecular formula C₇H₁₂O₃) is an organic ester compound. It appears as a clear, colorless liquid with a fruity scent. The substance is flammable, explosive, and volatile. It exhibits slight solubility in water but is fully miscible with organic solvents like alcohols, ethers, and ketones. It also demonstrates excellent dissolving properties for various synthetic resins.
Product Function
- Medically, isopropyl acetoacetate is employed to address conditions such as habitual abortion, preeclampsia, and infertility linked to vitamin E deficiency. It is also utilized in treating infantile nutritional megaloblastic anemia.
- It serves as a versatile solvent for nitrocellulose, ethyl cellulose, polystyrene, methacrylate resins, printing inks, and in various organic synthesis processes.
- Within the pharmaceutical industry, it functions as a dehydrating agent, an extractant, and a component in fragrances.
- A crucial raw material in organic synthesis, it is primarily used for manufacturing pharmaceuticals and veterinary drugs, notably in the synthesis of famodipine.
Production Methods
In a 500 ml flask equipped with a stirrer, thermometer, and reflux condenser, 150 g (2.5 mol) of isopropanol and 0.36 g of triethylamine were combined. 210 g (2.5 mol) of diketene was then added dropwise at room temperature, maintaining the reaction temperature at 70°C. After addition was complete, the mixture was held at 70°C for six hours. The crude ester was subsequently distilled under reduced pressure to yield 343 g of isopropyl acetoacetate, representing a 95.2% yield with a purity of 99.3%.
Product Application
Isopropyl acetoacetate is a key intermediate for pharmaceuticals and pesticides. In medicine, it is mainly used for synthesizing the cardiovascular drug nimodipine, specifically in producing 2-(3-nitrobenzylidene) isopropyl acetoacetate. Additionally, it serves as a fundamental raw material in the synthesis of organophosphorus insecticides.
Personal Precautions, Protective Equipment, and Emergency Procedures
Avoid generating dust or mist. Prevent contact with skin and eyes. Wear appropriate chemical-resistant gloves and ensure adequate ventilation. Remove all ignition sources. In case of a leak, evacuate personnel to a safe area, keeping bystanders away and upwind.
Environmental Precautions
If safe to do so, contain the spill to prevent further environmental release. Do not allow the chemical to enter drains or be discharged directly into the environment.
Methods and Materials for Containment and Cleaning Up
Collect the spilled material for proper disposal using suitable, closed containers. Eliminate ignition sources. Use spark-proof tools and explosion-proof equipment during cleanup. Adhered or collected material should be promptly disposed of in accordance with local, regional, and national regulations.
Disposal Methods
Dispose of the material at a licensed chemical destruction facility or via controlled incineration with appropriate flue gas treatment. Ensure storage and disposal do not contaminate water, food, feed, or seed. Do not release to sewer systems.
Contaminated Packaging
Containers can be triple-rinsed and offered for recycling or reconditioning. Alternatively, puncture packaging to render it unusable and dispose of it in a sanitary landfill. Combustible packaging materials may be disposed of through controlled incineration with flue gas scrubbing.
Delivery & Packaging
Standard packaging is 1 kg foil bags or 25 kg drums for export. Customized packaging services are available upon request.
Delivery can be arranged via courier, sea, or air freight.
