What Is It?

Acyclovir powder is a synthetic purine nucleoside analog.

Primarily used to treat a range of infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), this compound is effective for initial and recurrent outbreaks affecting the skin, mucous membranes, and external genitalia, as well as HSV-related infections in immunocompromised individuals. It stands as the preferred medication for HSV encephalitis, outperforming arabinosine in reducing both illness severity and fatality rates. Additionally, acyclovir powder is indicated for herpes zoster (shingles), Epstein-Barr virus, and viral complications such as chickenpox in those with weakened immune systems. When applied topically, systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.

How Should This Medicine Be Used?

Acyclovir powder is formulated into oral tablets, capsules, and suspensions for systemic use, as well as a delayed-release buccal tablet intended for localized treatment in the oral cavity. Oral forms—tablets, capsules, and liquid—are typically taken two to five times daily with or without food, for periods of 5 to 10 days, beginning immediately after symptom onset. For long-term management of recurrent genital herpes, administration typically occurs twice to five times daily, lasting up to 12 months to suppress outbreaks.

The delayed-release buccal tablet should be applied with a clean, dry finger as a single-dose application to the upper gum, no later than one hour after early cold sore indicators—such as itching, redness, burning, or tingling—occur, ideally before lesion formation. Use or take acyclovir at consistent times daily. Follow your prescription label precisely; consult your healthcare provider or pharmacist if any instructions are unclear. Never exceed the prescribed dose, frequency, or duration unless directed by a physician.

Do not chew, crush, suck, or swallow the delayed-release buccal tablet. Maintain adequate fluid intake while using it to minimize oral dryness.

Other Uses of This Medicine

Beyond standard HSV treatment, acyclovir is occasionally prescribed to manage herpetic eczema (a herpes-induced skin ailment), and to prevent and treat herpes-related infections of the skin, eyes, nose, and mouth in HIV-positive patients. It has also been explored in the management of oral vitiligo—a condition marked by white or gray hairless patches on the inner tongue or cheeks—as well as other dermatological manifestations.
