The leaves have indistinct or winged petioles. The flowers grow in terminal panicles with a tubular or tubular-campanulate calyx and a funnel-shaped corolla, usually pink in color.
Nicotine, an alkaloid found within the Solanaceae family (Solanum genus), is a key constituent of tobacco. It functions as an N-choline receptor agonist. Due to its action on both N1 and N2 receptors, as well as its impact on the central nervous system, nicotine currently lacks direct clinical therapeutic applications.

Application
Nicotinoids, which are pyridine alkaloids, are used in horticulture as insecticides. Nicotine can undergo oxidation to form nicotinic acid, which finds use in medicine, food products, and as a feed additive.
It’s utilized in the production of e-cigarettes, e-cigarette liquids, pharmaceuticals, foods, nutritional and healthcare products, essences and flavorings, cosmetics, animal feed supplements, cigarette flavoring agents, diet pills, smoking cessation aids, and a variety of other chemical and biochemical reagents.
Nicotinic acid is a readily volatile insecticide sourced from plants. It demonstrates efficacy in controlling aphids, scale insects, leaf miners, thrips, and butterfly larvae on both vegetables and fruit trees. Furthermore, it serves as a control agent against rice planthoppers and red spider mites found on cotton and citrus crops. Nicotinic acid predominantly exerts its insecticidal action through fumigation, along with contact, stomach poison effects, growth and development inhibition, and some ovicidal activity.
