Product Introduction:
What is ondansetron?
Ondansetron works by counteracting the effects of specific chemicals within the body responsible for triggering nausea and vomiting.
Ondansetron is prescribed to prevent nausea and vomiting that may arise from surgical procedures, cancer chemotherapy sessions, or radiation therapy.
Ondansetron may also be used for purposes outside of the standard prescribing guidelines.

Before taking ondansetron
You should not use ondansetron if:
- you are concurrently taking apomorphine (Apokyn); or
- you have a known allergy to ondansetron or drugs with a similar composition (dolasetron, granisetron, palonosetron).
To ensure that ondansetron is a suitable treatment for you, inform your physician if you have:
- liver impairment;
- an electrolyte imbalance (e.g., low potassium or magnesium levels in your blood);
- congestive heart failure, or a history of slow heartbeats;
- a personal history or family history of Long QT syndrome; or
- an obstruction within your digestive system (stomach or intestinal blockage).
Ondansetron is not anticipated to cause harm to an unborn child. If you are pregnant, it is imperative to inform your doctor.
The passage of ondansetron into breast milk and its potential effects on a nursing infant are currently undetermined. It is crucial to tell the doctor if you are currently breastfeeding.
Ondansetron's use is restricted to individuals aged 4 years and above.
Ondansetron orally disintegrating tablets contain phenylalanine and it is important that you advise your doctor if you have phenylketonuria (PKU).
How should I take ondansetron?
Administer Ondansetron strictly according to your doctor's prescription. Adhere to all guidelines outlined on your prescription label. Avoid consumption in quantities greater or lesser than recommended, and do not exceed the prescribed duration.
Ondansetron is suitable for consumption with or without food.
The initial dosage is often administered ahead of surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy. It is critical to meticulously follow your doctor's timing and dosage instructions.
Take the ondansetron regular tablet with a full glass of water.
To take the orally disintegrating tablet (Zofran ODT):
Maintain the tablet enclosed within its blister pack until immediate usage. Carefully open the packaging, peeling the foil back. Avoid direct pressure or pushing of the tablet through the foil to prevent accidental damage.
Ensure dry hands while extracting the tablet, subsequently placing it within the oral cavity.
Do not swallow the tablet intact. Permit it to dissolve gradually within your mouth, refraining from chewing.
Swallow repeatedly as the tablet dissolves.
WHAT OTHER DRUGS WILL AFFECT ONDANSETRON?
Ondansetron has the potential to trigger severe cardiac complications, notably when concurrently administered with certain medications, including antibiotics, antidepressants, heart rhythm regulators, antipsychotic treatments, and medicines indicated for cancer, malaria, HIV or AIDS. Keep your doctor informed about any medications you are taking, including those you commence or discontinue during ondansetron treatment.
Simultaneous use of ondansetron with specific drugs can lead to excessively high serotonin quantities within the body, a condition termed "serotonin syndrome" which can be fatal. Alert your physician if you are also taking:
- medications for treating depression;
- medications used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders;
- narcotic (opioid) medications; or
- medicines formulated to prevent nausea and vomiting.
This list is not exhaustive, and various other medications can interact adversely with ondansetron.
