What is Vitamin K2?

Vitamin K2 belongs to the broader Vitamin K group, a family of fat-soluble compounds essential for human health. As fat-soluble vitamins, they are absorbed through the digestive system and transported via lipid carriers known as chylomicrons to various tissues in the body. Many are familiar with the role of Vitamin K in blood coagulation—specifically, its involvement in synthesizing the clotting factors necessary to stop bleeding. This vital function was first identified in 1929, a breakthrough that later earned Henrik Dam and Edward Doisy the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1943.

Vitamin K exists in two primary natural forms: Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and Vitamin K2 (a series of menaquinones). The distinction between the two lies in their molecular structure. While Vitamin K1 contains a single isoprenyl unit, Vitamin K2 consists of multiple repeating units, referred to as MK-n (where n indicates the number of isoprene residues). Among the most biologically potent and widely studied forms is MK-7 (menaquinone-7), known for its long half-life and effective absorption.

Product Photo and Mechanism of Action:

Vitamin K2, particularly in its MK-7 form, plays a critical role in activating vitamin K-dependent proteins such as osteocalcin and matrix Gla-protein (MGP). Osteocalcin binds calcium in the bloodstream to bone tissue, supporting skeletal health. MGP helps prevent the calcification of arteries and soft tissues, contributing to cardiovascular wellness. This dual action positions Vitamin K2 as a vital nutrient for maintaining strong bones and flexible blood vessels.
