What is lansoprazole?

Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

It is commonly used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid), and other conditions associated with overproduction of stomach acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Over-the-counter lansoprazole (Prevacid OTC) is designed to manage frequent heartburn occurring two or more days per week. It is not intended for immediate or on-demand relief of heartburn symptoms.

Warnings

Lansoprazole may lead to kidney complications. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice reduced urination or blood in your urine.

This medication can cause diarrhea, which may indicate a new infection. Seek medical advice if your diarrhea is watery or contains blood.

Lansoprazole may trigger new or worsening lupus symptoms. Notify your doctor if you experience joint pain or a facial skin rash on your cheeks or arms that flares up in sunlight.

Long-term use or multiple daily doses of lansoprazole may increase the risk of bone fractures.

If you are also taking sucralfate (Carafate), do not take it at the same time as lansoprazole. Sucralfate can interfere with the absorption of lansoprazole. Wait at least 30 minutes after taking lansoprazole before taking sucralfate.

How should I take lansoprazole?

Follow the instructions on the product label or as directed by your doctor. Be sure to read all provided medication guides and instruction sheets carefully.

Lansoprazole is typically taken prior to meals. Prevacid OTC should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach, before breakfast.

Closely follow any "Instructions for Use" that come with your medication. If anything is unclear, consult your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.

For the oral suspension (liquid form), shake the bottle well before measuring a dose. Use the provided dosing syringe or a calibrated medicine measuring device—do not use a regular kitchen spoon.

Swallow the lansoprazole capsule whole. Do not crush, chew, break, or open it.

For orally disintegrating tablets, remove the tablet from its packaging only when ready to use. Place it on your tongue and allow it to dissolve naturally, without chewing. Swallow a few times as it dissolves.

Continue taking lansoprazole for the full duration prescribed, even if symptoms improve quickly.

Prevacid OTC is taken once daily for 14 days. Full symptom relief may take up to four days. After completing a course, wait at least four months before starting another 14-day treatment.

Contact your physician if your symptoms persist or worsen during treatment. If using Prevacid OTC, seek medical advice if heartburn intensifies during the 14-day period or if you require treatment more than once every four months.

Certain conditions are managed with a regimen combining lansoprazole and antibiotics. Take all prescribed medications exactly as directed.

Prolonged use of lansoprazole beyond three years may lead to a vitamin B-12 deficiency. If this occurs, discuss management strategies with your doctor.

Store at room temperature, protected from moisture, heat, and light. Do not refrigerate or freeze the liquid formulation.
