Hesperidin Powder

Product Overview

Hesperidin is a naturally occurring flavonoid compound, specifically a glycoside, characterized by a dihydroflavone oxyside molecular structure, displaying mildly acidic properties. In its purified state, this active ingredient presents as fine, white, needle-like crystals and is a primary constituent of what is historically known as Vitamin P. Through a process of hydrogenation, hesperidin is transformed into dihydrochalcone, a potent natural sweetener boasting a sweetness intensity approximately 1,000 times that of commonplace sucrose, making it an excellent candidate for functional food formulations.

Scientific research highlights a diverse range of biological activities associated with hesperidin. Modern investigations confirm its notable efficacy as an antioxidant, alongside demonstrated anti-cancer, anti-fungal, and anti-allergic properties. Furthermore, it is linked to lowering high blood pressure, inhibiting the growth of oral and esophageal cancers, helping to maintain cellular osmotic pressure, strengthening capillary walls and tenacity, and reducing circulating cholesterol levels.

Specific studies underscore the broad-spectrum antibacterial capability of hesperidin against common foodborne pathogens. It exerts significant inhibitory action against bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri (previously S. Freundii), Streptococcus haemolyticus, and Vibrio cholerae. Consequently, it finds extensive application within the food additive and food processing industries.

Functional Benefits

As a crucial natural phenolic compound, Hesperidin is recognized for its positive health implications. It is especially valued for its ability to diminish the fragility and permeability of blood capillaries, serving as an important adjunct therapy in the management of hypertension and capillary bleeding disorders. It improves capillary resistance (potentiating the effects of Vitamin C), exhibits anti-inflammatory and antiviral activity, and demonstrates an aldose reductase inhibitory effect, which can aid in preventing frostbite and reducing opacification in rat ocular lenses. Beyond these capabilities, Hesperidin helps sustain osmotic balance, boosts the rigidity of capillaries, decreases blood clotting time, and helps manage cholesterol levels.

Clinically, it is used as a supportive treatment for cardiovascular conditions and serves as a precursor in developing pharmaceuticals aimed at preventing atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction, being a key raw material for the medication "Maitong." Its antioxidant properties make it a beneficial natural preservative in the food sector, and it also holds promise for incorporation into cosmetic products.

The established broad-spectrum antibacterial effects of Hesperidin against common food contaminants, including prominent pathogenic strains such as Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, Streptococcus haemolyticus, and Vibrio cholerae, solidify its position as a highly useful ingredient in food additives and processing applications.

Product Applications

  1. Pharmaceutics (Vitamin Drugs): Utilized to enhance capillary integrity and reduce vulnerability, benefiting adjuvant therapeutic regimes for high blood pressure.
  2. Nutraceuticals: Recognized as a Vitamin P class agent, it reinforces capillary strength. Methyl hesperidin, a derived form, is also a Vitamin P compound and is officially registered in Japan's "Food Additive Public Certificate."
  3. Cardiovascular Support: Decreases the fragility and permeability of blood vessels.
  4. Phytochemical Source: A valuable flavonoid compound derived primarily from various citrus fruits.

Manufacturing Process

This compound is naturally present in the peels of citrus fruits, including lemons, oranges, and daidai flowers. Within the Citrus genus, fruits possessing developed mesocarp (the inner white spongy layer) tend to contain hesperidin, while those with thinner mesocarp contain other bioflavonoids.

Our Hesperidin Powder is extracted from dried, mature orange peel. The process involves finely chopping the dried peel and soaking it in 3–6 times its volume of water for approximately 30 minutes to facilitate swelling. Subsequently, 4–10% lime and 7–12 times the volume of water are added, mixed thoroughly, and the pH is checked, aiming for a highly alkaline range of pH 11.5–12 (adjusting with lime or sodium hydroxide as necessary). After soaking for 1.5–2 hours, the mixture undergoes centrifugal filtration. The filtered residue is re-suspended in 5–7 volumes of water, the pH is re-adjusted to 11.5–12 using lime, and soaked again before a second centrifugal filtration.

Once a clear filtrate is obtained, diluted hydrochloric acid is introduced to adjust the pH down to 5. The mixture is then allowed to stand for two days. The resulting precipitate is collected and washed with water until it reaches near-neutral pH, yielding the crude product. The crude extract is dissolved in a mixture of 1% sodium hydroxide and 50% ethanol. This solution is filtered, and the pH is adjusted back to 5 using dilute hydrochloric acid. After standing overnight, the precipitate is collected, washed once with 50% ethanol, and then washed with water until neutral. Finally, the product is dried at 70°C, crushed, and sieved to produce the final hesperidin powder. The typical yield from orange peel powder ranges from 0.6% to 1.8%.
